Bible 101: Introduction to the Bible | Rev. Rita is teaching 4 sessions every other Tuesday beginning April 17 | 7:00 PM | A different home each time | Bible 101 is the first in a three-part course of Bible study to be offered throughout 2010, including Bible 201: Gender and Sexuality in the Bible, and Bible 301: The Book of Acts. In the introductory sessions (Bible 101) Rita will teach you how to navigate your Bible, including how to pick a translation and study aids that are right for you. We will also discuss Walter Brueggeman’s book, The Bible Makes Sense, which gives a comprehensive overview of the content of the Bible and what it means to us today. If you weren't able to attend earlier sessions, please join us for the next.
New SOP Study Group: "The '7 Clobber' Passages of the Bible" | Film was shown in January | Discussion sessions followed at the church for 3 Sundays thereafter | The focus of the serie swas the 7 scriptural passages that many Christians believe condemn members of the LGBT community. Please contact Lauryn (lauryn7808@gmail.com) or Glenda (ssgship@msn.com) for a summary of what transpired.
SOP Movie Nights
In 2008 and 2009 we viewed the films, The Golden Compass, Normal and Crash. Afterwards we discussed the movies using study guides obtained from The Thoughtful Christian: Faithful Living in a Complex World or following discussion threads suggested by our very own movie watchers. Of course, we always enjoyed plenty of popcorn, sodas and even ice cream thanks to Lauryn and Kerry and their wonderful hospitality.
Atheism: A Christian Response
Because we are a liberal Christian congregation and therefore not all tradionalist or fundamentalist in our theology, we embrace people who adopt a wide range of philosophies to try to understand our world or "the meaning of life." One such philosophical approach is "atheism." In 2008 Floyd organized a one-session small group meeting one evening at Tom's home during which we studied a guide called "Atheism: A Christian Response," distributed by The Thoughtful Christian. As usual we strayed far from the narrow path suggested in the guide and ended up trading stories and our own belief systems which were, of course, as numerous as those of us in attendance. What a fun and challenging evening it was!
