Just like last year, Easter morning the weather started out nasty but turned absolutely lovely. At 7:00 AM we began preparing a traditional Easter feast in the kitchen at Community UCC. What a wonderful opportunity it was to visit with each other while cooking. Thanks, Sarah and Glenda, for bringing all the goodies to enjoy with our coffee. Once the meal was prepared and loaded into our cars, we headed for the Meals site at 9th and Austin under I-37.
We served ham, mashed potatoes, greenbean/tomato mix, breads/pastry (thanks to friends of Sarah and Glenda who own a bakery on DeZavala — Sarah, what is the name of the place?), pudding, bananas, apple sauce, bottled water and finally Easter eggs and candy. We served about 100 people; many came back for seconds. What was left was sent to the "Woman at the Well House." We'll save the extra candy for future Meals.
A big thanks goes to all the volunteer shoppers, cookers, servers and egg dyers who made this wonderful event happen. I was especially happy to have four kids helping this year — obviously, a great experience for them.
Thanks also to HEB and Costco for giving store credit donations, to Community UCC for letting us use their kitchen, filling us with delicious treats and coffee and sharing their egg hunt with us, and to the folks from East Central High School who donated candy. I had a wonderful time and I hope everyone else did, too.

Easter Meals Under the Bridge ‘08
submitted by Liz, Meals Coordinator this year
Easter morning weather was supposed to have been nasty but turned out to be lovely. Eleven members and friends started at Community UCC at 7:30am, getting right to work preparing a traditional Easter feast. During this prep time we had a wonderful opportunity to visit with each other in addition to cooking. Then we loaded up our cars and set off for the new Meals site at 9th and Austin under I-37.
We served up ham, mashed potatoes, a greenbean/tomato mix, breads/pastry (provided by the Meals folks), pudding, bananas, coffee/bottled water and of course our famous Easter eggs (boiled and decorated by SOP friends and members) and candy. We served approximately 80 people, with many coming back for additional plates. What was left was sent to Women at the Well House.
Many thanks to the fantastic volunteer cookers, servers and egg dyers who made this wonderful event happen. Thanks to HEB and Costco who gave store credit donations and to It’s A Grind Coffeehouse (I-10 and Huebner at The Strand) who donated coffee service (thanks for hauling all that, David!). A huge thanks also to Community UCC for use of their kitchen, feeding us a delicious breakfast and sending us with pastry, fruit and candy from their Easter breakfast to include in the meal.

An
Easter Meal Under the Bridge:
What a wonderful way to share the Easter Spirit!
Dear
Spirit of Peace brothers and sisters,
I wanted to report back to you on this morning's Easter Meal Under
The Bridge, which went very smoothly thanks to the wonderful help
we received.
First of all, thanks to the congregation for the generous $92.00 from
that "second collection" envelope I passed around after
the Palm Sunday service.
Next, thanks to Carl for bringing me to Sam's Club on his membership
card.
Carl provided lots of excellent advice while we shopped and is great
company! Next, thanks to our own Reverend Rita for her help, coordination,
and advice. Special thanks to Sarah G., Floyd, Pete and Eleanor, Mary
Anne, Kendra and Lena for their tireless work this morning. We served
140 people, and then a number of them came back for seconds. I cooked
up the 15 pounds of ground venison on Saturday night, and then we
made the pasta sauce, penne pasta, green beans, salad, pudding, and
tea this morning. The folks at Community Evangelical UCC, Rita's other
church (where we cooked and assembled everything), were wonderful
and welcoming, and often came in to offer their help. And most of
all we should be thankful to Ellen, who runs the Meals Under The Bridge
program, who spent an hour in her garage "training" me for
this, and who is one of the most giving persons I have ever met. The
folks who came to eat were warm and thoughtful and it was a pleasure
to meet them. Overall, the morning was a big success and a wonderful
way to share the Easter spirit. Thanks to everyone for your support...
Happy Easter to all.
Bill
